Learning Objectives:

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

• Describe the process of selecting and training an animal for therapy animal work.
• Discuss how to design therapy animal interventions to meet client treatment goals and build upon the animal’s unique skills and preferences.
• Identify best practices for setting the working space up in a way that protects therapy animal welfare.
• Describe key aspects of animal-assisted intervention (AAI) documentation.
• Explain best practices in vetting and recruiting third-party therapy animal teams.

Workshop Description:

What would it look like to unleash the power of the human-animal bond within your practice? Though many professionals love the idea of working with therapy animals, the field of animal-assisted interventions (AAI) has historically lacked the tangible resources that make the intervention widely accessible, ethical, and impactful. This interactive workshop will walk learners through newly launched resources that assist professionals at every step of the AAI journey. Learn how to select and train a therapy animal or vet and recruit third-party volunteer organizations that can provide you with volunteer teams.

We will explore the therapeutic impact and appropriate structuring of animal-assisted interventions, such as fetch games, grooming sessions, therapy animal perspective-taking, and more. Practical suggestions for office setup and intervention scheduling will be explored with the lens of protecting therapy animal welfare. Finally, suggestions for AAI documentation, including informed consent, incident reports, and animal behavior logs, will be provided and discussed.

Presented by: Taylor Chastain Griffin, Ph.D.

As National Director of Animal-Assisted Intervention (AAI) Advancement for Pet Partners and Executive Director of the Association of Animal-Assisted Intervention Professionals, Taylor Chastain Griffin, Ph.D. focuses on supporting research and professional development within the therapy animal arena. Having witnessed hundreds of interactions between her own therapy animals and the people with whom they’ve visited, she is passionate about bolstering the intervention with empirical investigation. Dr. Griffen obtained her doctorate in research psychology in 2018, with her studies focusing on the human-animal bond as it is experienced in contexts of shared traumatic experiences. From her undergraduate education in Psychology and Animal Behavior to her graduate work to become a mental health counselor, she has always strived to shape her educational and professional endeavors with the foundational goal of promoting AAI. She is also a published author, dog trainer, and Pet Partners team evaluator.
