- Describe how research-based models on trauma, neurobiology and the nervous system are essential to helping behaviorally challenging children.

Join Amy Bryant for a workshop on working with behaviorally challenging kids. In this workshop we will review three primary research-based models on trauma, neuroscience, and the nervous system to help us more deeply understand challenging behaviors. We will explore ways to increase children's engagement and emotional regulation in the therapy room through attunement and safety, and how to use strengths-based tools to help children better understand themselves. This self-awareness helps remove previous messages of shame with a science-based view of how their behavior is impacted by their growing brain and adaptive nervous system. We will also explore tools to support the children at home and in the community. And because children are still growing and developing, we will explore ways to get them the support they need to succeed, including how to enlist and engage the adults in their lives. When we teach the adults a new way to look at challenging behavior, the adults are then able to better regulate themselves and respond, versus react, to challenging behavior. The more adults are able to respond appropriately, the more children's brains are able to build their self-regulation capabilities. Since most adults struggle with their own dysregulated experiences, we will teach them some basic tools to help increase their own stress tolerance and regulation, as well.
