Learning Objectives:

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  1. Briefly review the main concepts and principles of ERP treatment and its benefits for clients with OCD
  2. Describe the types of resistance one might experience in treating someone with OCD and how to help clients pivot towards their therapeutic goals and values in life
  3. Discuss “resistant friendly” exposures to do with clients who are fearful of starting ERP work to build mastery and motivation
  4. Describe skills to teach your clients to help them navigate their ambivalence and resistance
  5. Review other modalities that can work synergistically with ERP to help navigate client resistance in OCD work
  6. Discuss factors to consider for treatment planning and case conceptualization for clients resistant to ERP treatment

Workshop Description:

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) may be one of the best modalities in treating OCD; however, getting a client to be consistent or even willing to participate in a treatment that encourages them to lean into their discomfort can be quite challenging. The client’s commitment to doing hard things brings about the most life changes for clients in ERP treatment. Most clients hate doing hard things, so we, as ERP therapists, are faced with clients dropping out of treatment, avoiding exposure practice, and the good ol’ subject change in sessions. After all, anxiety’s best friend is avoidance, right? This workshop will help therapists navigate client resistance and help them get clients back on track and motivated to become resilient in the face of OCD.
