Learning Objectives:

After completing this workshop in its entirety, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to include questions in an intake interview to identify dissociative symptoms
  • Describe the childhood environments most often at the root of dissociation and fragmentation of identity
  • Explain the symptoms that often co-occur with complex trauma disorders, and how to stabilize these symptoms in the initial stage of treatment (e.g., self-harm, suicidal ideation, post-traumatic intrusion, dissociative episodes).

Workshop Description:

Did you know that 2% of the population is affected by a dissociative disorder? That percentage is higher than the prevalence of chronic psychotic disorders. Yet, many mental health professionals do not receive training in graduate school regarding the specialized assessment and treatment of dissociation. In this 3-hour course, participants will be taught a structured interview designed to assess dissociative disorders efficiently. They will learn clinical skills to stabilize the symptoms most often experienced by childhood trauma survivors (self-destructive impulses, suicidality, PTSD symptoms, and severe dissociative symptoms). Participants will leave the workshop with some specific tools to help dissociative clients become more stable and more functional in their everyday lives.

Presented by: Tara Williams, Ph.D.

Dr. Tara Williams received her Bachelor's degree in 1995 from Vanderbilt University and her PhD in clinical psychology from Texas A&M University in 2001. Dr. Williams has been specializing in dissociative disorders for 25 years. Her training and work with complex trauma survivors began in the Trauma Disorders Program at Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Baltimore, MD, from 2001 to 2007, under Dr. Richard Lowenstein. She also worked for 2 years in the Center for Post-Traumatic Disorders at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington under the consultation of Dr. Christine Courtois. Subsequently, Dr. Williams moved to Atlanta and worked at the Anxiety and Stress Management Institute, where she continued to treat clients with complex trauma histories and dissociative symptoms. She has been in private practice since 2010, seeing complex trauma clients, and routinely provides consultations for patients and clinicians regarding complex PTSD and dissociative disorders.

Attendance Policy: 100% attendance and completion of a course evaluation is required at any CE program in order to receive credit for that CE program. No partial credit is given. Certificates of completion will be available in each attendee’s account once the broadcast has ended and the course evaluation completed.
