  • Compare normal grief and complicated grief

Workshop Description:

Modern Western culture has long struggled to deal well with grief. Yet, our modern era is replete with grief: The COVID-19 pandemic, addiction crises, violence, political discord, increasing employment and financial insecurity, and more. In this webinar, we will identify how and why grief presents, the barriers to responding well to grief, and how to develop more compassionate and responsive approaches to managing grief. The presenter will also describe how to recognize and facilitate grief and mourning in therapy, drawing on a contemporary theoretical model of grief. (Worden, 2018). Normal grief will be described, including the necessary tasks of mourning. Normal grief will be distinguished from complicated grief, including how to assess for more complicated grief. Principles for facilitating grief counseling in both normal and complicated grief and mourning, and common therapist barriers to addressing grief in counseling, will be discussed.
