Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss neuroplasticity, developing a clear understanding of the physiological types of neuroplasticity.
  • Contrast ways we can use both top-down and bottom-up strategies to increase neuroplasticity.
  • Compare the differences between positive thinking, toxic positivity, and positive neuroplasticity and how this informs our work with clients.
  • Outline Paul MacLean’s “triune brain” framework and how this concept is important in managing our needs, and how it can inform the coping strategies we choose.
  • Illustrate how neural encoding, consolidation, and reconsolidation are related to neuroplasticity.
  • Discuss how neuroplasticity, memory, and resilience are related.
  • Demonstrate how state, trait, and neuroplasticity can work together to change a client’s fundamental experience.
  • Outline the history of resilience studies and how we have arrived at our current understanding of the factors contributing to resilience.
  • Apply the components of resilience.
  • Demonstrate educating clients about neuroplasticity and applying these concepts and skills with them.

Workshop Description:

Do you ever wonder how to help your clients develop longer-lasting resources? How to grow more resiliency to help them weather the next storm? So often, clients come in and work through hard things, growing and repairing in your time with them, but struggling hard between appointments. As therapists, we develop expertise in helping clients recover from crises, heal from difficult symptoms, and grow through adversity, but recovery can be lost between appointments or with poor support systems. We, and our clients, can be so focused on the bad experiences that it becomes difficult to maintain hope. In fact, we are wired to learn from bad experiences and to remember them more intensely. Unfortunately, this evolutionary tendency can begin to chip away at our ability to experience and increase resilience and beneficial emotions. Our natural resilience can begin to wither, leaving us less and less able to navigate stress or burnout.

In this workshop, we’ll learn how to harness neuroplasticity, increase resilience, and help clients navigate challenges without losing focus on their therapeutic goals. We’ll learn the triune model of the brain and how to help clients assess their needs and choose coping strategies. We’ll learn skills for helping clients develop and internalize calm, safety, satisfaction, and connection. With intention and practice, these strategies increase resilience, neuroplasticity, and well-being. You’ll be able to distinguish between toxic positivity, positive thinking, and genuine positive neuroplasticity and be able to explain why this is important. You’ll be able to help clients through myths, obstacles, and reluctance to try these methods.

During our time together, we’ll learn and practice, making this difficult topic understandable and useful for you and your clients. We invite you to spend the day with us learning to transform your therapeutic approach. You’ll be able to explain, understand, and use these concepts that harness the power of the nervous system, neuroplasticity, and resilience.
