Learning Objectives:

After completing this workshop in its entirety, you will be able to:

  • Describe reasons why spirituality is an undervalued aspect of cultural competency in the field of clinical psychology.
  • List 4 reasons why patients may be underserved regarding their spirituality.
  • Explain both the protective and harmful aspects of spirituality and religion
  • Describe how a patient’s spiritual beliefs fit into the framework of a Control-Mastery Theory (CMT) plan formulation.

Workshop Description:

Most human beings, now and throughout our 200,000-year history, have had a spiritual life. Spirituality and religion have formed, for better or for worse, one of the core pillars of human culture and have shaped each age of human development. In modern psychology, however, spirituality is often an afterthought or even actively avoided or criticized. There is an enormous gap between the religiosity and spiritual life of therapy providers (who are overwhelmingly atheist, secular, or non-religious) and people who providers work with. This leads to miscommunication, missed opportunities at times, and even harm to others.

This course will aim to offer guidance about key questions about working with spirituality in therapy:

  • How can therapists learn to incorporate clients’ spiritual and religious world more fully into the work they do?
  • What if they don’t share their client’s views, experiences or beliefs?
  • Explore and think through ethical dilemmas in working with spirituality. Is it ever appropriate for therapists to recommend religious or spiritual practices? Is it ever appropriate, or even necessary, for therapists to challenge patients’ religious or spiritual beliefs?

Presented by: Trevor Ahrendt, Psy.D.

Trevor M. Ahrendt, Psy.D., is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in private practice in San Francisco, where he sees adults and provides Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy. He is the co-founder and head clinical supervisor of The San Francisco Therapy Group. He received his doctorate from The Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA. He serves on the board of the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group and previously served on the board of the Northern California Group Psychotherapy Association. A lifelong student of both therapy and personal transformation, he has studied across most major modern theories, lived and practiced in a Zen residential center, spent 40 days in silent mediation retreat, and attended and explored a wide range of spiritual communities and practices. Over the past decade, he’s taught more than 100 continuing education courses.

Dr. Ahrendt has provided trainings to organizations and clinicians on addiction, the therapeutic relationship, and mindfulness in therapy. He is particularly passionate about teaching Control Mastery Theory — a poorly named but incredible theory that offers a truly unifying, trans-theoretical understanding of the therapeutic process. Refund/Cancellation Policy: If you can no longer attend a workshop you have registered for, you can either receive a credit for another workshop or receive a refund if you are within the refund policy period. Attendance Policy: 100% attendance and completion of a course evaluation is required at any CE program in order to receive credit for that CE program. No partial credit is given. Certificates of completion will be available in each attendee’s account once the broadcast has ended and the course evaluation completed.
