Learning Objectives:
After completing this workshop in its entirety, you will be able to:
- Describe at least three factors that influence compliance with treatment recommendations among medical patients.
- Explain Motivational Interviewing and Motivational Enhancement Therapy.
- Identify at least four different MI-based strategies that can be used in clinical practice to promote effective health management and engagement in daily activities.
Workshop Description:
This workshop is designed for health care professionals across various disciplines (including but not limited to, physical therapists, occupational therapists, SLPs, and mental health providers who work in medical settings). Healthcare providers commonly experience challenges in helping their patients adhere to treatment recommendations, complete homework, and make behavioral changes in service of their overall health goals; this experience can be extremely frustrating for both the provider and the patient. Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motivational Enhancement (ME) techniques can be a straightforward approach to building rapport, fostering patient buy-in, increasing motivation, and enhancing patient outcomes with reduced frustration for all parties involved. This workshop will provide the basic foundational tools associated with MI and ME, enabling providers to immediately apply these techniques in their practice.
Workshop Agenda:
- Relevant background (25 minutes)
- Discussion about issues on noncompliance/nonadherence and difficulty with behavior change interventions in health care settings
- Impact of nonadherence on patient health outcomes, including barriers to access that many clients experience from a lens of health disparity and inequality
- Impact of nonadherence on patient mental health outcomes
- Impact of patient nonadherence on provider-patient relationship
- Description of MI and ME and relevant research background on use of these techniques in medical populations (30 minutes)
- Define Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET)
- Review scholarly literature on use of MI and MET in medical populations/health care settings
- Demonstration of Core Skills in Motivational Interviewing (80 minutes)
- Introduction to dealing with ambivalence and listening for change talk, including description of specific tools and techniques
- How to ask questions in an MI consistent manner; eliciting change talk, including description of specific tools and techniques
- Listening and reflecting skills, including description of specific tools and techniques
- How to provide information in an MI consistent manner, including description of specific tools and techniques
- MI and ME facilitation techniques to promote health management and daily activity engagement
- Skill Integration and Case Examples (30 minutes)
- Case Example #1
- Case Example #2 (from a different discipline with different target behaviors than case #1)
- Discussion of common pitfalls in practice
- Hot Topics in MI (15 minutes)
- MI for addressing vaccine hesitancy
- AI chatbots providing MI
Presented by: Jennifer Steiner, Ph.D., ABPP
Dr. Jennifer Steiner is a board-certified clinical health psychologist, founder of Beyond the Body Health Psychology Services, LLC, and an Adjunct Faculty at Emory School of Medicine. Dr. Steiner is an expert in the field of pain psychology and has worked with patients with chronic pain for over 15 years. Prior to founding her private practice in 2021, Dr. Steiner worked for several years as a pain psychologist for the Atlanta VA Healthcare System. Dr. Steiner has trained over 20 psychology interns and postdocs in health psychology and has published multiple scholarly articles on psychological correlates and interventions for chronic pain and coping with cancer. Additionally, Dr. Steiner is a seasoned presenter and has presented on these topics at the regional, national, and international levels. Dr. Steiner has also served as a subject matter expert for the Arthritis Foundation and a guest speaker for several different organizations, including Miles for Migraine and the Lighthouse Lymphedema Network. She is committed to furthering both professional and public education on the psychological impact of chronic pain and illness and frequently serves as a guest on various podcasts.
