- Explain ADHD and Autism as diagnoses and how they manifest differently in women and girls with attention to the roles of culture, gender-role socialization, and minority stress perspectives
- Explain the biological and neurological underpinnings of ADHD and Autism in girls and women and ways in which structural differences and hormones modulate neurodiverse female brains
- Assess ADHD, Autism, as well as AuDHD and differentiate between these and other psychological diagnoses to prevent misdiagnosis and inappropriate or harmful treatment in girls and women
- Demonstrate providing psychoeducation and care to clients regarding accommodations, treatment, and interventions across environmental, psychopharmacological, and behavioral domains
- Prepare neurodivergent-affirming therapists to assist clients in embracing their identities as neurodiverse superstars with creative interventions, identifying and embracing interests, and pacing treatment and progress to maintain a healthy and balanced nervous system
Workshop Description:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are neurodevelopmental conditions that traditionally have been studied and diagnosed primarily in males. However, recent research has highlighted significant differences in how these disorders manifest in females, leading to underdiagnosis, misdiagnosis, and unique challenges in their understanding and treatment. Moreover, societal expectations and gender norms can influence how ADHD and ASD are perceived and diagnosed in females. Girls and women are often expected to exhibit different behaviors and social skills than males, which can mask their challenges and delay diagnosis. This can also have significant implications for self-concept, academic achievement, mental health, and overall well-being.
In this workshop, the voices and experiences of women with ADHD, Autism, and AuDHD will be included throughout the presentation. We will review current research and thinking on the experiences, challenges, and treatment of women and girls with ADHD, Autism, and AuDHD, centering on ways to shift our clients’ understanding of neurodiversity to reduce shame and assist them in learning how to thrive with a neurodiverse brain. This workshop seeks to assist clinicians in becoming neurodiversity-affirming therapists, working alongside our clients to assist them in embracing their unique brains and leaning into their lived experiences through assessment, appreciation of sensory sensitivities, collaborative coaching, functional analysis, and individualized therapeutic treatment approaches. Clinicians will learn about designing hacks, creating external structures, and utilizing curated, optimally stimulating, and motivating interventions, as well as pacing therapeutic interventions and change processes while attending to the role of internal and external environments.
