Learning Objectives:
After completing this workshop in its entirety, you will be able to:
- Describe the core features, historical context, and clinical relevance of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), and discuss how awareness of RSD can enhance diagnostic clarity, therapeutic empathy, and treatment planning for clients with ADHD and autism.
- Explain the prevalence, neurobiological underpinnings, and developmental trajectory of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) in ADHD, and identify clinical strategies—including screening, psychoeducation, and validation—that improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce misdiagnosis, and strengthen therapeutic alliance.
- Describe how Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) uniquely manifests in autistic clients—including the roles of masking, chronic misunderstanding, and heightened suicidality—and identify clinical strategies that validate client experiences, prevent misdiagnosis, and strengthen therapeutic alliance through tailored interventions.
- Apply theoretical models of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) to clinical case formulation and assess differential diagnoses with overlapping conditions—including Borderline Personality Disorder, PTSD, depression, and social anxiety—in order to improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce stigma, and strengthen treatment outcomes.
- Assess clients for Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) using multimethod approaches—including clinical interviews, collateral history, and observational strategies—in order to improve diagnostic accuracy, protect clients from misdiagnosis, and guide appropriate treatment planning.
- Utilize evidence-informed interventions for Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)—including psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioral strategies, emotion regulation skills, attachment-based approaches, and family/systemic work—in order to tailor treatment to client needs, reduce harm, and improve therapeutic outcomes.
Workshop Description:
Have you ever struggled to make sense of clients whose reactions to rejection seem ‘disproportionate’ or confusing?” Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is an emerging construct in clinical practice, often seen in clients with ADHD and autism, yet frequently misdiagnosed as borderline personality disorder, depression, or trauma responses. This 6-hour workshop provides a comprehensive framework for understanding, assessing, and treating RSD. Participants will explore its foundations, ADHD and autism-specific presentations, theoretical models, differential diagnosis, assessment strategies, and evidence-informed interventions. Grounded in current research, the training emphasizes diagnostic clarity, therapeutic alliance, and reducing the stigma that often surrounds clients living with RSD.
Across six hours, clinicians will gain practical tools to apply directly in their work with clients. Through case vignettes, reflection prompts, and intervention strategies, participants will learn to screen effectively, validate client experiences, and utilize psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioral methods, emotion regulation skills, and attachment-based approaches tailored to diverse client populations. By the end of the course, attendees will leave equipped not only to recognize and conceptualize RSD with confidence, but also to integrate client-centered interventions that reduce shame, improve functioning, and protect against misdiagnosis.
