Workshop Description:

Are you overwhelmed by the red tape involved in helping students with disabilities secure services or accommodations in public schools? Many families seek evaluations and treatment services from private providers or other agencies to support their children with disabilities. Students with disabilities may qualify for special education services through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or accommodations through a 504 Plan. These plans require specific paperwork to establish eligibility and to implement appropriate support. They also require clear communication and collaboration with school teams for documentation and implementation.

This workshop will present a framework for sharing clinical information with school teams so that students with disabilities can receive the support they need. Topics will include laws and procedures for IEPs and 504 Plans, evaluations and eligibility for services or accommodations, IEP development, and addressing behavior and discipline issues. Participants will learn how to document student needs effectively and how to communicate with school staff during meetings.

• The 3 C’s of Student Success: A framework for student success
• Understanding the differing perspectives of IEP meeting parties and using them to communicate and collaborate for student success

• Overview of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504
• The 6 pillars of IDEA and how they protect students
• Considerations for Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE)

• Comparison of school and private evaluations and impacts on students
• Overview of the special education eligibility process and how to secure services as quickly as possible if eligible

• How IEPs are developed to help students succeed
• Distinguishing between accommodations, modifications, and interventions and how they support students with disabilities differently
• Services and placements available to support students with disabilities

• Discipline protections in place to protect students with disabilities
• How to support students with behavioral challenges in the school setting

Presented by: Brandi Tanner, Ph.D.

Dr. Jennifer Steiner is a board-certified clinical health psychologist, founder of Beyond the Body Health Psychology Services, LLC, and an Adjunct Faculty at Emory School of Medicine. Dr. Steiner is an expert in the field of pain psychology and has worked with patients with chronic pain for over 15 years. Prior to founding her private practice in 2021, Dr. Steiner worked for several years as a pain psychologist for the Atlanta VA Healthcare System. Dr. Steiner has trained over 20 psychology interns and postdocs in health psychology and has published multiple scholarly articles on psychological correlates and interventions for chronic pain and coping with cancer. Additionally, Dr. Steiner is a seasoned presenter and has presented on these topics at the regional, national, and international levels. Dr. Steiner has also served as a subject matter expert for the Arthritis Foundation and a guest speaker for several different organizations, including Miles for Migraine and the Lighthouse Lymphedema Network. She is committed to furthering both professional and public education on the psychological impact of chronic pain and illness and frequently serves as a guest on various podcasts.
