- Presented by: David Woodsfellow, Ph.D. (see bio below)
- Instruction Level: Intermediate
- Target Audience: Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists, Psychotherapists, Other Mental Health Professionals
Learning Objectives:
In this workshop, you will learn how to:
- Explain John Gottman’s three-step couples assessment
- List the details of your own couples' assessment
- Analyze each couple’s strengths, weaknesses, and prognosis
- Identify the areas each person needs to improve
- Create a specific treatment plan for each couple
- Demonstrate how to give couples important feedback about their situation
Workshop Description:
Are you anxious when you meet with a new couple? Do you feel overwhelmed? There’s so much to do and so little time:
- You need to establish rapport with both of them—even when they disagree.
- You need to hear and understand each of them—even if they are very escalated.
- You need to give them a positive experience – even though they’re hurt, scared, or angry.
- You need to instill some hope – even when they’re very discouraged.
- You need to show them that therapy can help – even if one is very skeptical.
- You need to explain your policies and get informed consent to treatment.
- . . . . And get payment. And make their next appointment, etc.
It’s impossible to do all this at once. Luckily, there’s a much better way. John Gottman suggests we start therapy with a three-step assessment process. Dr. Woodsfellow has done this with over 500 couples, and it is so much easier and more effective. You’ll be amazed at the difference it will make in your therapy.

What people are saying about this workshop:
- “Best presentation I have ever attended. So informative and kept my attention the whole time. Loved the couple example he used throughout and with each segment of his descriptions of the process. I will always look for presentations by Dr. David. So engaging and relevant information even though I don't work with couples. This was invaluable to ALL interpersonal relationships!” – KN, LAPC
- “David was clear, organized, kind, transparent, and had a good command of his theoretical foundations. The specific tools are clear and user friendly. The clarity of presentation to clients was modeled and encouraged. David's teaching encourages me to accept the gentle authority of my role as couple's therapist and refreshes my thoughts of how I will handle each session. This workshop was great to sharpen my tools as a couple's therapist. He is a great instructor!” – MT, LCSW
- “Dr. Woodsfellow is clearly well trained, passionate, and knowledgeable about how to create a strong therapeutic relationship with couples. Examples of all stages, assessments that would be helpful each step of the way, and specific examples using a fake couple were very helpful. I learned a great deal about helpful assessments to implement in my practice. These resources will equip me with evidence-based materials in how I conceptualize and treat couples. Great training! Thank you!” – BB, LAPC
- “Dr. Woodsfellow is one of my favorite presenters. Always clear, concise, informative and engaging.” – CA, LPC
- “David was extremely knowledgeable and engaging! I would sign up for another CE from him!” – SH, LPC
- “Dr. Woodsfellow is extremely knowledgeable and I learn a lot from each training.” – MG, LMFT
