- Presented by: Becky
Beaton-York, Ph.D., LPC, CPCS
- Target Audience: Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists, Psychotherapists, Other Mental Health Professionals
- Instruction Level: Intermediate
Educational Objectives:
In this workshop, you will learn how to:
- Explain the importance of training Supervisees in "TeleMental Health" and providing effective telemental health supervision (Continuing Education is now a requirement of supervisors in several states, including by the Georgia Composite Board)
- Describe how Artificial Intelligence has become a new area frontier of technology-assisted media and how to utilize it in your supervision (e.g., teach supervisees to create treatment plans and progress notes utilizing AI and how to do so ethically)
- Summarize what you need to include in your Supervisory Informed Consent, including recent requirements PSYPACT has employed regarding practicing in other states, which will most likely effect the Counseling and Social Workers Compacts as well.
- Discuss the circumstances regarding whether a Supervisee may practice across state lines under your license or not.
- Identify what technology applies to Telemental Supervision, including audio and video recordings of client sessions and how this technology needs to be stored, transferred, and destroyed.
- Review ethical guidelines for supervision and relate these to Telemental Health.
- Demonstrate ways to respond to and manage emergencies, including a thorough Assessment for Fit for telemental health clients, and the supervisor does the same with supervisees they may supervise via technology-assisted media to reduce vicarious liability (Both "Assessments for Fit" forms are included in this training).
- Discuss the difference between Supervision and Consultation
Workshop Description:
The use of "technology-assisted media" in the delivery of mental health services (or Telemental Health) has generated a lot of confusion and controversy. First of all, many therapists are confused about what even constitutes Telemental Health, which is much more far-reaching than many people realize. Basically, if a device requires electricity and you're using it to administer any level of mental health care, you're practicing Telemental Health. This includes phones (voice and texts), computers & tablets (email, billing, or storage of files), fax machines, the Internet (cloud storage of records, billing transactions, video-conferencing, the use of artificial intelligence, or even recommending apps and websites to clients). There is also a multitude of ethical issues and requirements related to each of these options, and every therapist's ethics code now states we need training in Telemental Health. This is why many licensing boards have passed laws requiring therapists to complete training in Telemental Health. Taken one step further, we need to make sure that our supervisees are aware of these requirements and nuances, and we need to apply them in supervision as well.
Presented by: Becky Beaton-York, Ph.D., LPC, CPCS
Dr. Beaton-York has provided behavioral health services since 1991, and she has a true passion for ethics. She's been on the Georgia Psychological Association's Ethics Committee since 2010 and their Ethics Chair for eight of those years. She was also the Ethics Chair for the Licensed Professional Counselor’s Association of Georgia (LPCA-GA) from 1999-2001. Early in her career, Dr. Beaton-York taught at Georgia State University and has been adjunct faculty for Emory's Department of Psychology since 2016, primarily providing ethics training for their faculty. She has also served as an ethics expert on several malpractice cases.
Dr. Beaton-York founded a large anxiety and OCD practice in Atlanta that she ran from 2004-2019 until she sold it. Many of her ethics examples come from these 15 years of managing up to 40 clinicians and answering ethical dilemmas nearly daily. She has also coached numerous group practice owners since 2010. Literally, she has taught tens of thousands of therapists how to manage ethical issues in one form or another for the past 25 years. In other words, navigating ethical dilemmas is Becky's jam. :-) Since she loves ethics, teaching, and mentoring, this inspired her to start The Knowledge Tree. Furthermore, Dr. Beaton-York was voted Counselor Educator of the Year by LPCA-GA in 2005 and received their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
Lastly, you may have seen "Dr. Becky" on one of the 60 episodes that she filmed as the featured psychologist on TLC's "Hoarding: Buried Alive." She has also made appearances on The Anderson Cooper Show, Good Morning America, CNN Headline News, and other media.
