Workshop 2 (On-Demand Webinar): Competent Care for Transgender and Gender Nonconforming (T/GNC) Adult Clients
Learning Objectives:
After completing this workshop in its entirety, you will be able to:
- Define gender non-conforming and gender nonbinary.
- Review data regarding prevalence estimates of people identifying as trans/gnc and rates and reasons of people detransitioning.
- Identify mental health risks and their relationship to minority stress.
- Describe approaches to gender-affirming hormone treatments and gender-affirming surgical interventions
- Explain the different roles performed and ethical issues encountered by mental healthcare providers with transgender and gender-nonconforming clients and their families.
- Recognize and utilize specific therapeutic approaches and terminology for counseling transgender and gender-nonconforming clients effectively.

Presented by: Ren Massey, Ph.D.

Ren Massey, Ph.D. (he/him), was awarded the 2025 Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Community Service Award for his years of service to the transgender and gender diverse (TGD) community by the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University’s School of Medicine. At the 2024 WPATH Symposium in Lisbon, Dr. Massey received the WPATH Harry Benjamin Distinguished Education Award for years of providing and organizing educational programs around the world on transgender and gender diverse issues. Dr. Massey has been a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in the Atlanta area for over 30 years. He conducts psychotherapy and evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults, and specializes in LGBTQIA+ issues, particularly in gender identity.
Dr. Massey was elected a Fellow of the Georgia Psychological Association (GPA) for founding the committee that is now GPA’s Gender & Sexual Minorities Committee. He has served GPA in many roles, including GPA’s Ethics Committee and 2017-18 GPA’s President. For the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), he has served on the Board of Directors and on the committee that updated the WPATH Standards of Care (Version 8) for people who are Transgender and Gender Diverse. After serving on the Faculty and Steering Group of the WPATH Global Education Institute (GEI), he was nominated and selected as Mental Health Chair (2021-2024), and he now serves as the Mental Health Programming Chair of WPATH GEI. In this position, he oversees the mental health aspects of the national and international training programs of the WPATH GEI.
