  • Apply current affirming language when working with TGD adults
  • Discuss significant social stressors for TGD adults
  • Demonstrate five pieces of information or approaches to support TGD adults

Workshop Description:

This workshop is an extension and update of "Competent Care for Transgender & Gender Nonconforming Adult Clients," Dr. Ren Massey’s first program for the Knowledge Tree. In this program, attendees will learn essential information from the latest Standards of Care Version 8 (SOC 8) published by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). The WPATH SOC 8 are the guidelines used by insurance companies and many experts in the field of TGD care, so anyone working with transgender and gender diverse (TGD) clients should be familiar with the SOC. Dr. Massey will review the recommendations in half of the chapters, relevant for adults, of the SOC 8. Additionally, some of the latest research relevant to TGD people will be covered. Experiencing and coping with Minority Stress related to being TGD and intersecting identities and social realities will be addressed. Dr. Massey will provide specific clinical approaches to supporting TGD people, including information to gather from clients and interventions to benefit them. Attendees are encouraged to interact with Dr. Massey and other attendees, with 20-30 minutes dedicated to case discussion and Q&A.

*NOTE: To maximize the benefit of this second program in a series on working with TGD adults, taking Competent Care for Transgender & Gender Nonconforming Adult Clients (6 hours) is a helpful foundation to build on and is strongly recommended because some concepts discussed will assume knowledge provided in the precursor 6-hour program. To ensure you have the benefit of the first workshop in the series, it is offered at a bundled price with this second workshop.

** Also, a future program by Dr. Massey will address working with TGD Adults coming out and living within their family, social, and work/education contexts, and will review the other half of the (adult) chapters of the SOC 8. Please stay tuned.
