After completing this workshop in its entirety, you will be able to:

  • Describe the neurobiological and trauma-informed mechanisms underlying dissociation as an adaptive survival response.
  • Explain how dissociation differs from other commonly misunderstood clinical presentations, including psychosis, personality pathology, and emotional avoidance.
  • Identify verbal, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and physiological indicators of dissociation that may emerge during psychotherapy.
  • Apply trauma-informed interventions that promote stabilization and client safety when working with individuals experiencing dissociation.

Workshop Description:

What would you do if a client experienced dissociation in or between sessions? This workshop reframes dissociation as an adaptive trauma response rather than pathology. It explores the dissociative continuum, differential diagnosis, and clinical presentations. Participants will learn practical, trauma-informed strategies to recognize and respond to dissociation, improve confidence, and support stabilization in therapy.

Workshop Agenda:

  • Exploring the neurobiological and trauma-informed mechanisms underlying dissociation and explaining its adaptive function as a survival response across the dissociative continuum. (45 mins)
    • Current neurobiological research outcomes on dissociation
    • Dissociation as a spectrum of experience
    • Common misconceptions about dissociation
  • Differentiate dissociation from psychosis, personality pathology, emotional avoidance, and other commonly misunderstood clinical presentations using current trauma-informed conceptualizations. (90 mins)
    • Diagnostic criteria and differentiators
    • Medical and cultural considerations in diagnostic approaches
    • Screening tools and appropriate uses
  • Recognize verbal, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and physiological indicators of dissociation that may emerge during psychotherapy and interpret these responses within a trauma-informed clinical framework. (30 mins)
    • How to discuss dissociative experiences with clients
    • Exploring indicators of dissociation in session
  • Apply trauma-informed interventions that promote stabilization, therapeutic presence, attunement, and client safety when working with individuals experiencing dissociation, while reducing clinician fear, avoidance, and unnecessary pathologizing. (75 mins)
    • Present moment awareness exercises and activities
    • Review ISSTD guidelines and phased approach to working with dissociative clients
    • Explore the research body for best practice approaches in each phase
    • Case Formulation and Case Study Exercises

Presented by: Rebecca Huls, LPC

Rebecca Huls, LPC, is an EMDR Consultant and Licensed Professional Counselor with more than 14 years of experience providing mental health services. She earned her Master's degree with Distinction from Queen Mary University of London and holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Kennesaw State University. Her career background includes inpatient and outpatient services, private practice management, and diagnostic assessments. Throughout her career, Rebecca has specialized in trauma, dissociation, and evidence-based therapeutic approaches that support lasting healing and recovery.
In addition to her clinical work, Rebecca is an experienced speaker and educator who has presented workshops and trainings for organizations including The Home Depot, His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC), and the Licensed Professional Counselors Association (LPCA) Regional Conference. She is passionate about translating complex psychological concepts into practical, accessible tools that clinicians can immediately apply in their work. Rebecca's presentations integrate current research, professional best practices, and real-world clinical experience to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences for mental health professionals.

Registration: To register for individual workshops, you may use our online payment option, or to pay by check you may print and complete the Registration Form and mail or fax it to our office. The registration form is available on our website: www.theknowledgetree.org. Registration is permitted until the time the workshop begins, unless otherwise specified.

Multiple Workshop Special: There is a 10% Discount with registration for two workshops. There is a 15% Discount with registrations for three or four workshops. There is a 20% Discount with registration for five or more workshops.

Refund/Cancellation Policy: If you can no longer attend a workshop you have registered for, you can either receive a credit for another workshop or receive a refund if you are within the refund policy period. Attendance Policy: 100% attendance and completion of a course evaluation is required at any CE program in order to receive credit for that CE program. No partial credit is given. Certificates of completion will be available in each attendee’s account once the broadcast has ended and the course evaluation completed.
